Window: Spatializing Occupation

In this short intervention, I ask, What is at stake, politically and conceptually, in understanding militarism not as stable unfolding similarly across geographies, but deeply contingent on historical contextual specificities? How might we then unpack the question of home becoming a catalyst militarism? constitutes under saturated state control occupation where neither subtle nor benign enforced through violence? Emplacing vignette window that came up during my ethnographic fieldwork Srinagar, Kashmir, reflect conditions gendered vulnerability, fear, violence, everyday negotiations survival become urgent concerns for people surviving colonial occupation. This essay part Roundtable called “The Housewife’s Secret Arsenal” (henceforth HSA); collection eight object-oriented engagements focusing particular material instantiations domesticated war. The title roundtable deliberately tongue-in-cheek reminding readers many ways militarisms can be invisible to their users yet persistent form mundane household items aid labor homemaking. Juxtaposing stereotyped “housewife” with theater war raises questions about quiet migration these objects technologies from battlefield kitchen, or bathroom, garden. Gathered together an “arsenal,” uncanny proximity one another becomes key critical tool asking how comes find itself our lives.
